About the Office: 

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas, with approximately 190 Assistant United States Attorneys, is among the largest in the country. The office prosecutes federal crimes and represents the interests of the United States in civil cases. The Southern District of Texas stretches from the Houston area southwest to the Mexican border. The United States Attorney's Office operates staffed offices in Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.

Job Description: 

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas seeks one or more experienced appellate prosecutors to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in its Houston office. The incumbent will brief and argue direct criminal appeals before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The incumbent will also litigate habeas cases in district and appellate courts, and will provide real-time assistance to trial prosecutors throughout the district. The district's appellate caseload is extremely heavy; the incumbent will file multiple appellate briefs each month.

Qualifications: 

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least three years of full-time post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in federal criminal appellate practice is preferred. This position is for an experienced attorney with a proven track record in high-volume federal criminal appellate work. Other hiring preferences include superior legal writing and research ability, outstanding organizational and time management skills, strong academics, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.

Salary: 
$51,811.00 to $135,519.00 per year
Travel: 
Occasional travel for appearances before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and for training.

Veterans:  There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions.
