Our headquarters are located in Fairview Heights, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis, MO. Our branch offices are located in Benton, IL and East St. Louis, IL, in or near the federal courthouse. The office presently employs 30 attorneys and 31 support staff.
The Southern District of Illinois is comprised of the lower 38 counties of the State of Illinois and has a population of approximately 1.2 million. Our most populous counties, Madison and St. Clair, are adjacent to the Mississippi River and are within the St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Illinois is currently accepting applications from attorneys who have a strong civil litigation background for the position of Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) with a primary focus on Affirmative Civil Enforcement.
The Civil Division consists of a team responsible for protecting the rights and interests of the American people by legal representation, enforcement of federal laws, and defense of U.S. interests. Our Civil Division investigates and prosecutes affirmative civil cases on behalf of the United States, as well as defends the United States in a variety of defensive actions.
The AUSA's duties will include providing direction to law enforcement agents investigating violations of the Federal False Claims Act, reviewing and analyzing large volumes of records, conducting depositions and other civil discovery, drafting civil complaints and trying civil cases before the United States District Court, and representing the United States in civil appeals before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Candidates should be capable of handling a high volume and wide variety of significant and complex civil prosecutions.
The duties of any AUSA can be reassigned depending upon the district's future staffing needs.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progresses.
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
United States citizenship is required.
Admission to the Illinois bar is not required but is preferred.
Three years of post-J.D. litigation experience is preferred.
Civil litigation experience is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability, good judgment, and superior communication and courtroom skills. Applicants must be team players who exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Applicants must have demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.
Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic court filing, and electronic e-mail and word processing systems.
The AD-0905-21 is the minimum grade level for which applicants may be selected; applicants may be selected up to the AD-0905-29 level, based on qualifications.
Type of Position: All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
