About the Office: 

The United States Attorney's Office prosecutes federal criminal offenses and defends the U.S. Government's interest in civil cases.  The Southern District of Alabama (SDAL) covers approximately 14,000 square miles, including 400 miles of coastline and 1,700 miles of navigable waterways. This District serves 13 counties within the state and a population of approximately 813,400 citizens.

Job Description: 

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Alabama is seeking applications from experienced/senior litigators for an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) vacancy to serve in the Criminal Division.  Assistant United States Attorneys assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal criminal cases, such as fraud, public corruption, money laundering, immigration offenses, economic crime, narcotics offenses, firearms violations and violent crimes.

As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement.

All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis.

Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), have at least 3-years post-JD experience in the legal field, and possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. 

Preferred Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will possess at least 7 years of legal experience prosecuting complex federal or state criminal cases.

Must have demonstrated a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case; and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies.

You must be a United States Citizen or National to be considered for this position.  

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Salary: 
Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The current range of basic pay is $53,062.00 to $138,790.00, plus locality pay.
Travel: 
Occasional travel may be required.

Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions.
