The Office of Chief Counsel provides legal services and guidance to all components of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in matters that arise in the conduct of DEA missions to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. The office provides legal support to the DEA by analyzing the legal implications involved in policy decisions, advising and training DEA personnel worldwide on criminal, civil, and regulatory legal issues, reviewing pertinent proposed legislation and regulations affecting DEA operations, and representing DEA in civil and administrative litigation.

The incumbent will support the Administrative General Law Section and DEAs Office of Diversion Control by providing legal advice and guidance in the following areas that impact the Diversion Program: Procurement and fiscal law, including representing the agency before the various Boards of Contract Appeals: Federal Information Law, including Freedom of Information Act Litigation, and Privacy Act matters; Employment Law, Environmental Law, and Security Clearance law and procedure; and other general law matters.
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least five (5) years post J.D. legal experience. Applicants must also have 1) excellent academic credentials; 2) strong oral and written communication and advocacy skills; 3) superior legal research and analytical skills; and 4) a demonstrated ability to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Ideal candidates will have prior experience with the Privacy Act and the Freedom of Information Act. Applicants must also meet eligibility requirements for a Top Secret security clearance.
