About the Office: 

The Central District of Illinois covers the 46 centrally located counties of Illinois. The Headquarters office is located in Springfield, Illinois with staffed branch offices in Peoria, Rock Island and Urbana. The district currently has 28 attorneys, and approximately 35 additional support staff. The mission of the Central District of Illinois is to serve and protect the citizens of the Central District of Illinois through vigorous, ethical and impartial enforcement of the laws of the United States.

To accomplish this mission, assigned personnel work cooperatively with other Federal, state and local law enforcement and community agencies to improve the safety and quality of life; protect the public funds and other assets of the United States; maintain a courteous and professional working environment; and, with skill and integrity, seek to achieve justice in every civil and criminal matter. The District is divided into four divisions: Criminal, Civil, Appellate, and Administrative.

Job Description: 

The United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois is currently seeking qualified applicants for a position as Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Criminal/Appellate Division for our Peoria, IL location, which is one of four branch offices in the district. AUSAs in the Criminal Division supervise the investigation of and prosecute federal offenses involving among other things, financial fraud, hate crimes, identity theft, economic crimes, firearms trafficking, counterfeiting, program fraud, immigration violations, drug trafficking, violent crimes, domestic terrorism, bank robbery, human trafficking, child exploitation, transportation of stolen goods, prisoner litigation and public corruption.

This position will also have a focus on appellate work. The duties of this position will also include handling all aspects of appeals before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, including writing appellate briefs and, arguing cases.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications: 

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate analytical ability, good judgment, and excellent communication and courtroom skills. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants should be proficient in the use of a computer. Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and highly professional manner with other attorneys, professional support staff, client agency representatives, law enforcement officers / investigators, opposing counsel, and court staff.

Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also possess excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic court filing, electronic email and word processing systems. Experience using sound appellate litigation strategy in substance and organization of court submissions and the ability to prepare for and execute moot court, pre-argument discussions, and oral arguments.

Salary: 
Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $51,917 to $153,176, which includes 14.16% locality pay.
Travel: 
Occasional Travel for Trials and Training is required.
