About the Office: 

The Office of Tribal Justice was established in 28 C.F.R. 0.134 in response to the overwhelming demand by Indian tribes for better coordination within the Department of Justice and among other federal agencies on legal issues affecting tribes. OTJ ensures uniformity of Department policies and litigation positions relating to Indian Country; and coordinates with other federal agencies and with tribal, state, and local governments on their initiatives in Indian Country.

Job Description: 

As Deputy Director, partners with the Director in component-level leadership responsibilities, including policy- and program-related decision making, organizational development, strategic planning, and representation of the Office of Tribal Justice and the Department of Justice.

Incumbent advises the Director of the Office of Tribal Justice and senior Department of Justice leadership on significant tribal justice matters; participates in policy and legislative development and review; and represents the Office of Tribal Justice and the Department in meetings and conferences within and outside the Department.

Advises Department of Justice components litigating, protecting, or otherwise addressing Native American rights and/or related issues.

Confers and coordinates with attorneys and officials of the Department of Justice, other government agencies, and interested parties to provide guidance and advice to ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and policy requirements.

Maintains liaison with federally recognized tribes, and works with the appropriate federal, tribal, state, and local officials, professional associations, and public interest groups.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must be currently employed by the federal government, possess a J.D. degree with at least eight years of post J.D. experience, and be an active member of a bar (any jurisdiction). Applicants must be proficient in analyzing complex legal information and producing clear and thorough written work, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Experience with Federal Indian Law is required. Prosecution and/or litigation experience is required. The incumbent must be able to obtain at least a Secret-level security clearance.

Salary: 
$126,245 - $158,700 (GS-15)
Travel: 
Frequent travel is required.

Veterans:  There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions.
