Job Description: 

The U.S. Attorneys Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) to serve in the Appellate Division of the Savannah headquarters office. This is an uncompensated one-year position. The SAUSA will represent the United States in criminal and civil cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The selectee may also handle some district court actions as follows: (1) actions filed by federal prisoners under 28 U.S.C. § 2255; and (2) other post-conviction litigation under the supervision of a lawyer in the USAO's Appellate Division. Additionally, the SAUSA may be required to provide advice and support to lawyers in the Criminal and Civil Divisions. The SAUSA will receive substantial training. Applicants must have a very strong ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, write clearly and persuasively, possess a strong work ethic, exhibit good organizational skills, exercise fair and sound judgment, pay careful attention to facts and details, work well both independently and on a team, be ready and willing to volunteer to help other attorneys, be able to negotiate effectively with opposing counsel, and be devoted to justice, excellence, and representing the public.

Qualifications: 

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree and be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or District of Columbia. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).

Preferred Qualifications: The office seeks an individual with excellent written and oral communication skills; a strong work ethic; the ability to work well both independently and with others; and dedication to serving the public.

Salary: 
This is a one-year appointment without compensation or benefits.
Travel: 
Occasional travel within and outside the District will be required.

Suitability and Citizenship:  It is the policy of the Department to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for employment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use prior to final appointment.  Employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory adjudication of a background investigation. Congress generally prohibits agencies from employing non-citizens within the United States, except for a few narrow exceptions as set forth in the annual Appropriations Act (see, https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/working-in-government/non-citizens/). Pursuant to DOJ component policies, only U.S. citizens are eligible for employment with the Executive Office for Immigration Review, U.S. Trustee’s Offices, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Candidates who have lived outside the United States for two or more of the past five years will likely have difficulty being approved for appointments by the Department Security Staff. Veterans:  There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions. Although the "point" system is not used, per se, applicants eligible to claim 10-point preference must submit Standard Form (SF) 15, Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference, and submit the supporting documentation required for the specific type of preference claimed (visit the OPM website, www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF15.pdf for a copy of SF 15, which lists the types of 10-point preferences and the required supporting document(s).
