EILEEN SOBECK TO SERVE AS DEPUTY ASST. ATTORNEY GENERAL
FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES DIVISION


WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Eileen Sobeck has accepted the job of Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) of the Justice Department, Lois Schiffer, Assistant Attorney General for Environment and Natural Resources, announced today. Sobeck replaces Nancy Firestone, who has become a judge on the Court of Federal Claims.

"Eileen brings to this job strong litigation experience, excellent management skills, dedication to public service, and a lifelong commitment to environmental issues," Schiffer said. "I am pleased that Eileen has accepted the job of career deputy. Her many talents and skills are an important part of the work that we do."

Prior to her appointment, Sobeck served for 15 years as the Chief of the Wildlife and Marine Resources Section of the ENRD. Before joining the Justice Department, Sobeck served in the Office of the General Counsel at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, specializing in marine mammal and endangered species cases.

Sobeck will be one of four deputies who serve the ENRD.. She will oversee the Environmental Crimes and Land Acquisition sections of the division and be involved in certain Executive Office matters.

Sobeck's lifelong interest in wildlife began in high school when she lived in Kenya with her family. An active scuba diver, Sobeck has a seaslug species named after her. She is a graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School. Sobeck lives in Takoma Park, MD, with her husband and two children.
