The U.S. Attorney's Office in Boise takes great pride in its externship program – and for good reason. Every effort was made to ensure that my experience was fulfilling. During my eleven weeks, I was given assignments in the office's civil, criminal, and appellate divisions that were both challenging and interesting. I drafted motions and memoranda on suits in all stages of litigation, from the pretrial stages, through judgment, and beyond to the appeal. I had a variety of substantial researching and writing projects, including motions, briefs, and advisory memos. The highlights included writing a brief that was submitted to the Ninth Circuit, attending a settlement conference, and appearing in court under a limited license.
The attorneys and staff were welcoming, immensely capable, and actively encouraged us to participate. Moreover, they would consistently take the time to talk with us and ensured we were able to take full advantage of what the office had to offer. Throughout the summer, we had brown bag lunch sessions, in which an attorney would give a presentation on a particular area of law. The office also held invaluable writing workshops, designed to improve the clarity and persuasiveness of our writing.
I could not have asked for a better experience. I learned a lot, improved my skills, and had a great summer.
