Pathway Program - Student Employment (STEP)
The U.S. Attorney's Office employs a limited number of students in the Pathways Program. Students need not be in a law or pre-law curriculum, and may or may not be assigned duties which relate to their course of study. Students are given one-year temporary appointments in the excepted service, which may be extended in up to one-year increments, as long as they continue to meet the definition of student. Positions range from GS-1 up to and including GS-5, and are based on the individual's qualifications. Students may work full-time during summer and vacation periods or part-time, however, the hours worked cannot interfere with academic studies.
Students interested in the Pathways Program appointment must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school. Students must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma or certificate. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Please note that all employment is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background investigation. Applicants are also subject to drug testing by urinalysis.
Vacancy announcements are occasionally prepared and distributed to local colleges and universities as vacancies occur. Student Temporary Employment vacancies are also posted on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website at: www.usajobs.gov. In addition the Human Resources Office also maintains an Applicant Supply File for applications received outside of a specific announcement. Any student interested in applying for a specific vacancy or a potential vacancy should submit their resume and a copy of their official transcript to:
