About the Office
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama has jurisdiction and responsibility in a broad range of areas, all of which involve representing the legal interests of the federal government, primarily in United States District Court. The Middle District of Alabama consists of 23 counties in central and southeastern Alabama and employs approximately 50 persons, including 21 Assistant United States Attorneys. Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered
The District is seeking applications from highly qualified trial attorneys who will be responsible for investigating and prosecuting a wide range of complex civil cases involving civil fraud, health care fraud, mail fraud, grant fraud, procurement fraud and Affirmative civil actions. Experience as relator’s counsel in qui tam litigation is preferred. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of investigating and litigating affirmative fraud claims on behalf of the United States under the False Claims Act and other statutes.
Required qualifications:Applicants must possess a J.D. degree , be active members in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction, and have at least 3 years post J.D. work experience as a civil trial attorney in the prosecution of Plaintiff/affirmative civil enforcement actions in a wide range of commercial litigation.
Preferred qualifications: Applicants should demonstrate quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants should demonstrate superior oral and writing skills, strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants should possess excellent communications and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies. Applicants should possess excellent computer skills which should include experience with automated research and various word-processing systems. The applicant will be expected to do the majority of his/her own legal research and writing and should be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.
Ideal candidate will possess at least five (5) years of civil litigation experience as a plaintiff attorney. Attorneys who have demonstrated experience in successfully representing plaintiffs in complex cases and experience with qui tam, multi-district class actions; first and second chair experience are preferred.
Occasional travel within and outside the District will be required.
Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The salary for this position will be within range of $50,894.00 to $134,702.00 which includes locality pay.
The United States Attorney’s Office in Montgomery, Alabama, is located at 131 Clayton Street, Montgomery, Alabama. Montgomery is the capital city of the state, but has a small town atmosphere. The office is a short and easy commute from most outlying residential areas. Montgomery is a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
