U.S. Attorney and FBI Focus on Internet Safety & Cyber Threats
U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe joined FBI Special Agent in Charge Matthew W. Fodor at FOX 13 Tampa Bay Studios to discuss the prevalence of online threats in the Middle District of Florida and beyond. Both law enforcement executives sat down with Unscripted podcast and Good Day Tampa Bay program host Laura Moody to educate viewers about the seriousness of threats perpetrated against victims over the internet and social media platforms.
Separately, as part of Safer Internet Day, U.S. Attorney Kehoe spoke with FOX 13 reporter Kylie Jones about current internet crimes and the need for parental vigilance in monitoring children’s online activities.
“We can’t prosecute our way of this problem. Neither can law enforcement arrest our way out of it,” said U.S. Attorney Kehoe. “Parents have to know what platforms their children are on and who they are speaking with.”
Using the internet or social media to make threats to injure or harm individuals can have dire consequences. A point emphasized by both DOJ representatives.
“If you make a threat online,” said U.S. Attorney Kehoe, “we are going to take you at your word and prosecute you.”
