Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, G.F. Peterrnan, III, announced that on Thursday, July 2 1,2005, defendants Trelliny T. Turner and William L. Broxton, were sentenced by United States District Court Judge Hugh Lawson, for a series of crimes related to the burglary and theft of mail and currency from the United States Post Office and federal building in Valdosta, Georgia.

The sentencing hearing took place in the federal building in Valdosta, which the defendants burglarized on September 3,2004. Defendant Turner was employed as a clerk by the U.S. Post Office, which is located on the first floor of the federal building in Valdosta. Defendant Broxton was Turner's boyfriend. Defendant Turner, a former postal employee, was sentenced to 240 months (20 years) in prison, and defendant Broxton was sentenced to 300 months (25 years) in prison. Both defendants were already in custody and remained in custody after sentencing. The Court substantially increased the sentences of both defendants based upon threats made by them against federal agents investigating this case and threats to flee prosecution.

Both defendants were convicted on April 7,2005, after a seven-day jury trial of the following offenses: conspiracy to steal U.S. mail, theft of U.S. mail (containing $266,000 in currency and money orders), interstate transportation of stolen property, money laundering, and misleading conduct towards another person concerning a federal crime.
