About the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine

The United States Attorney is the chief federal law enforcement officer within the federal judicial district of Maine which comprises the entire state.  The office represents the United States and has responsibility for:

• The prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal government;
• The prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and
• The collection of debts owed the Federal government which are administratively uncollectible.

Our headquarters office is located in Portland, in Cumberland County, Maine’s largest county with a population of 305,231. Our branch office is located two hours north in Bangor, in Penobscot County, Maine’s third largest county with a population of 152,765. The Portland office houses the U.S. Attorney; 22 Assistant U.S. Attorneys including a Criminal Chief and Civil Chief, and 19 support staff. The Bangor office is served by six Assistant U.S. Attorneys including a Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney and six support staff.
