The 2016 District Attorneys Conference was held in Albuquerque on April 26-28, 2016. On April 26, 2016 Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Rozzoni and DEA Special Agent Jeff McKinley presented a training session on “Drug Trends in and Around New Mexico” during the conference. The presentation focused on the coordination of federal and state prosecutions and the benefits of each, as well as some of the most recent trends in methamphetamine, heroin, and synthetic cannabinoid investigations and prosecutions.

DEA hosted this seminar at its Albuquerque office from May 9-13. Approximately 25 state, local and federal investigators are attending the seminar to learn about the nuts-and-bolts of drug investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rozzoni participated in the seminar by presenting a session on the basics of federal drug laws and prosecutions, courtroom expectations, and the working relationship between investigators and prosecutors.

Smart on Crime AUSA Henderson, joined a DEA Special Agent and several students at the UNM College of Pharmacy in making an drug prevention and education presentation at the Albuquerque Public Schools’ 2016 School Health Education Institute Conference. The conference was attended by approximately 50 teachers who provide health-related education at APD high schools and middle schools. The presentation was made pursuant to the prevention and education component of the HOPE Initiative.

USA Damon Martinez and DEA participated in the 22 nd Annual New Mexico Law Enforcement Conference “Honoring the Fallen by Training the Living,” in Albuquerque, N.M. USA Martinez and DEA jointly conducted a workshop entitled “The Impact of the Heroin and Opioid Epidemic in New Mexico and Fentanyl Debrief for Law Enforcement.” The conference was attended by approximately 250 state, local, tribal and federal law enforcement officers from around the state.

On April 15, 2016, DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Sean Waite discussed DEA’s mission with the law student externs who have been volunteering in the USAO’s Albuquerque office this semester and also gave the externs a tour of the DEA office. The event was coordinated by Smart on Crime Assistant U.S. Attorney Henderson.
