Rick A. Mountcastle has served as Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia since January 7, 2017. Mr. Mountcastle has served as a federal prosecutor for more than thirty years, first with the Department of Justice and, for the last twenty-two years, with the United States Attorney’s Office. During his tenure with the United States Attorney’s Office, Rick has served as First Assistant United States Attorney and, before that, as Civil Chief. Rick earned his undergraduate degree from Marquette University and his law degree from the George Washington University National Law Center. After law school, Rick served on active duty as a Captain in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and retired from the Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
