Mexican Citizen Sentenced for Illegally Reentering U.S.

MADISON, WIS. -- Jeffrey M. Anderson, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Fortino Velasquez-Jimenez, 37, a native of Mexico living in Wausau, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to six months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States.  Velasquez-Jimenez pleaded guilty to this charge on September 12, 2017.

In sentencing Velasquez-Jimenez, Judge Conley expressed concern that the defendant had engaged in violence during two long-term relationships and that he had a prior conviction for illegal entry.

The charge against Velasquez-Jimenez was the result of an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
