Mexican Citizen Sentenced for Illegally Reentering U.S.

MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Jesus Sanchez-Lopez, 47, a citizen of Mexico who was residing in Madison, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 24 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after having been previously deported.  Sanchez-Lopez pleaded guilty to this charge on August 16, 2016.

Sanchez-Lopez claimed he reentered the United States to help his girlfriend who was suffering from medical issues.  While saying that the defendant may have had a noble reason for returning, Judge Conley sentenced the defendant to 24 months, in part, because the defendant had previously served an 18-month sentence for the same crime.

The charge against Sanchez-Lopez was the result of an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
