Middleton Woman Sentenced To Two Years For Embezzlement

MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Brenda Werfal, 55, Middleton, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 24 months in federal prison for embezzlement.  Werfal was ordered to pay $1,123,384.38 in restitution.  Werfal pleaded guilty to this charge on September 24, 2013.

Werfal was employed as an office manager for Specialty Billing Services (SBS) since 1993.  In this capacity, she was responsible for receiving payments for services rendered by doctors employed by Southern Wisconsin Emergency Associates (SWEA), paying debts associated with those employees, and making payroll payments for SWEA employees.

While employed as an office manager with SBS, Werfal embezzled a total of $1,572,217.70 from SWEA for her own personal gain.  Using the monies she stole, among other things, Werfal made payments towards her personal medical and tax bills.

The charge against Werfal was the result of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Munish Sharda.
