Mosinee Man Sentenced To Five Years For Gun Crime

MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Julian Alvarez, 31, Mosinee, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to five years in federal prison for unlawful possession of firearms by a felon.   Alvarez pleaded guilty to this charge on July 16, 2013.

On October 5, 2012, police found four loaded firearms in Alvarez's bedroom.  Alvarez, who was present during the search, admitted that he was a felon and that the guns belonged to him.  Two of the firearms had been stolen from Statton's General Store in Tomahawk, Wis., three days earlier.

In sentencing the defendant, Judge Crabb noted Alvarez's lengthy criminal record and history of drug abuse.  Alvarez has a prior felony conviction for possession of narcotics.

The charge against Alvarez was the result of an investigation conducted by the Wausau Police Department, Marathon County Sheriff's Office, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.
