LLOYD E. CURRY, age 31, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to 28 years in prison for illegally possessing firearms and distribution of heroin in New Orleans, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Vance ordered that CURRY be placed on six (6) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

CURRY pleaded guilty on February 23, 2011. According to the factual basis, CURRY sold 1.2 grams of heroin for $200.00 to an FBI informant in the parking lot of an auto parts store on Old Gentilly Road in eastern New Orleans on September 10, 2009. Special agents of the FBI Violent Crime Task Force conducted surveillance and witnessed the illegal transaction. On September 18, 2009, while inside his vehicle at a McDonald’s parking lot on the I-10 Service Road in eastern New Orleans, CURRY sold 3.36 grams of heroin to an FBI informant for $500.00. This drug transaction was successfully captured through a hidden recording device. Then, on October 2, 2009, while inside an apartment at the Berkeley Apartments complex in Slidell, Louisiana, CURRY sold 2.36 grams of heroin to an FBI informant for $400.00. This drug transaction was also captured through a hidden recording device. FBI agents ultimately arrested CURRY at a bar on Carondelet St. Shortly thereafter, agents conducted a search of CURRY’s vehicle and discovered two loaded Glock .40 caliber pistols. As a previous three-time convicted felon, CURRY was precluded from owning or possessing any firearms. The vehicle also contained several personal items further linking CURRY to the vehicle. These items included a Sex Offender Registry form with CURRY’s name on it, a utility bill with CURRY’s name on it, and a bank record belonging to CURRY.

Due to his extensive prior criminal record, CURRY was designated as an Armed Career Offender in accordance with the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. CURRY’s prior criminal record coupled with the nature of the firearms possessed served as the basis for the 28 year sentence.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Violent Crime Task Force which is comprised of members of the FBI, New Orleans Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department, Louisiana State Police, Kenner Police Department, and the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rick Veters and Jay Quinlan of the United States Attorney’s Office’s Violent Crime Unit.
