RONI ALEXIS MARTINEZ-REYES, age 28, a citizen of Honduras, was charged in a two-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for illegal re-entry by an alien previously removed and illegal use of a Social Security number, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to the indictment, on or about May 25, 2012, MARTINEZ, an alien who had previously been removed from the United States, was found in the United States, in Orleans Parish within the Eastern District of Louisiana, without having obtained consent from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reapply for admission to the United States. The indictment also alleges that on the same date, MARTINEZ falsely represented that a Social Security number had been assigned to him by the Commissioner of Social Security with intent to deceive, in an attempt to obtain a United States Passport.

If convicted for illegal re-entry, MARTINEZ faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two (2) years, a fine of $250,000.00 and one (1) year of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. If convicted for illegal use of a Social Security number, MARTINEZ faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five (5) years, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendants must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case was investigated United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations (ICE) and the United States Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service with the assistance of the Louisiana State Police.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U. S. Attorney Robert Weir.
