The United States Attorney's Office announced that during a federal court session in Missoula, on May 31, 2011, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah C. Lynch, the following individual appeared:

RAYMOND DEAN SMITH, a 42-year-old resident of Helena, made an initial appearance on a complaint alleging sexual exploitation of children, receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. SMITH came to the attention of law enforcement in Helena, Montana as a suspect in numerous incidents where he is alleged to have entered residences without permission. He is currently detained. If charged with these offenses, SMITH faces possible penalties of a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and could be sentenced to 30 years, a $250,000 fine and lifetime supervision on the sexual exploitation of children charge; a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison and could be sentenced to 20 years on the receipt of child pornography charge; and 10 years in prison on the possession of child pornography charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcia K. Hurd is the prosecutor for the United States. The investigation was a cooperative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the Helena Police Department and the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office.

A complaint is merely a written statement of the essential facts constituting the offenses charged. The United States has thirty days from the date of the criminal complaint to present an indictment to a Grand Jury.
