Summary

(LES//FOUO) National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) analysis of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data indicates that heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine seizure amounts in year-to-date (YTD) 2010 were above average, while cocaine seizure amounts were below average. Seizure amounts for all drugs decreased in YTD2010 compared with YTD2009, except for heroin seizure amounts, which increased significantly during the same period. (See Chart 1, Chart 2, Chart 3, and Chart 4.)

(LES//FOUO) Analysis of February 2010 seizure data reveals that all monthly drug seizure amounts were above average except for cocaine seizure amounts, which were below average. The amount of heroin seized was the highest monthly total recorded since October 2009, the only other month when seizures totaled more than 100 kilograms. Cocaine seizure amounts were slightly higher than in February 2009 and were the highest since July 2009. Marijuana and methamphetamine seizure totals both decreased slightly compared with February 2009. (See text box below; see Table A.)

(LES//FOUO) Most Significant Data Findings

  • All drug seizure amounts for YTD2010 and February 2010 were above average except for cocaine seizure amounts, which were below average during both periods.

  • The amount of heroin seized in YTD2010 exceeded all other YTD amounts since 2006. Heroin seizure totals in February 2010 were the second-highest monthly seizure totals since 2006.

  • Cocaine seizure totals in YTD2010 were the lowest YTD totals since 2006; however, the amount seized in February 2010 was the highest monthly seizure amount since July 2009.

  • Methamphetamine seizure amounts in YTD2010 were slightly lower than in YTD2009 but were more than double all other YTD totals since 2006. Methamphetamine seizure totals this month were the highest since May 2009.

  • Marijuana seizure totals in YTD2010 were slightly lower than in YTD2009 but were significantly higher than all other YTD amounts seized since 2006. Total marijuana seizures decreased slightly in February 2010 compared with February 2009.
