2 Total miscellaneous closings under such categories as "request withdrawn," "duplicate request," and "unprocessed." "Unprocessed" for 1978 are approximately 1,898. For some components an existing backlog is increased by these additional "unprocessed" requests. In addition, included here are 256 "preprocessed" requests reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). "Pre-processed" records are those for which any necessary screening was accomplished upon receipt of the first of several requests for the same records. Many pre-processed records are subseqently made available in the FBI public reading room.
3 The 1977 report did not include requests completed which were received in prior years. This resulted in an understatement of the FOI statistics for 1977. Five components were able to "pick up" these statistics. OLA reported 6; Tax reported 18; DEA reported 58; FBI reported 1,289 and BOP reported 51. These figures are not included in the above statistics.
