Charity and Compensation
We have given to charity to assist the victims with immediate needs.
Americans have been more giving than any of us would have expected. We must
assume immediate needs were met with our donations, but the millions of
dollars now available through charities should most definitely be taken into
consideration when providing crime victim compensation. Our 50 states all
provide crime victims compensation and each program uses collateral sources
before a claim is paid. We should not be seeking to make wealthy survivors
out of terrorist victims. We can not be prepared to do such a thing every
time a terrorist attack may happen. Our world has changed and we should go
forward with caution in setting a precedent for crime victim claims.
