Mr. Kenneth L. Zwick, Director
Office of Management Programs
Civil Division
U.S. Department of Justice
Main Building, Room 3140
950 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20530
Dear Mr. Zwick,
After the tragic events of September 11th, I, like so many of my fellow
employees, dug deep to help the poor victims of that fateful day. We raised
thousands of dollars just in our office alone, but felt it was a good deed
for all the unfortunate victims and survivors. None of us, while digging
into our pockets and pocketbooks, ever conceived that your department would
exclude someone from receiving compensation simply because they were gay or
lesbian. The Justice Department will allow compensation to illegal aliens,
which is right, but will not allow compensation to gays and lesbians. I am
angry, appalled and ashamed of our government! How could you possibly
justify your actions? Thousands of caring citizens gave their hard-earned
money to help the victims and their loved ones. Now we discover that the
Justice Department will not include any loved ones of homosexual victims to
receive any of the Congress appropriated funds. This is absolutely
outrageous, and you and Kenneth Feinberg should hang your heads in disgrace.
I am a heterosexual female, with friends of all races, religions and sexual
preferences. I always felt we as Americans were so lucky - we had a
democratic society accepting all peoples of the world - but your actions
have made me question that now. You must do the right thing and give funds
to all survivors and loved ones of the 9/11 victims - whether homosexual,
heterosexual, illegal aliens or children born after Setpebmer 11th.
Sorrowfully,
