
Guatemalan Citizen Sentenced to Two Years in Federal Prison for Illegal Reentry into the United States
Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today, June 28, 2010, that Edgar Barrios-Arriaza, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage to 24 months in prison for his conviction of reentry after deportation.
Senior United States District Court Judge H. Russel Holland imposed the sentence on Barrios-Arriaza, age 40. The defendant will be deported following his prison sentence.
According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Bradley, Barrios-Arriaza, a citizen of Guatemala, was found in an Anchorage residence on March 24, 2010, when officers executed a search warrant and arrested several other individuals on drug charges. Barrios-Arriaza was found to have been previously deported November 2, 2005, subsequent to a conviction for an aggravated felony. The defendant was convicted in Alaska state court in 2002, of misconduct involving weapons in the second degree, for shooting a firearm into a dwelling.
Ms. Loeffler commended Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Barrios-Arriaza.
