Felon indicted on drug charges, illegal possession of firearms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2012

Anchorage, Alaska B Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Feldis announced that an Anchorage man was indicted by a federal grand jury on drug charges as well as the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Gus Brant Doulgerakis, 36, of Anchorage, Alaska, is the sole defendant named in the three-count indictment, which charges him with possession with the intent to distribute both heroin and cocaine, possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and illegal possession of firearms by a convicted felon.  The indictment alleges that, on September 27, 2012, Doulgerakis possessed 17 firearms despite being a convicted felon.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Courter, who presented the case to the grand jury, indicated that the law provides for a maximum total sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine on the drug charge, while the firearms offenses could subject Doulgerakis to additional prison time.  Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant.

Mr. Feldis commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Anchorage Police Department for conducting the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
