
United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Alabama Collects $1,839,958
Montgomery, Alabama - U. S. Attorney Leura Canary, for the Middle District of Alabama, announced today that the financial collections by the Department of Justice in criminal and civil actions in FY 2010, reached an all-time high, due to the efforts of the U. S. Attorneys’ offices nationwide. The ninety-four U. S. Attorneys’ offices nation-wide collected $6.68 billion during the government’s fiscal year. This amount is the most successful collection year by the U. S. Attorneys’ offices, amounting to more than three times their appropriated budget for FY 2010.
According to statistics from the Department of Justice, the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama collected $1,839,958.84, in FY 2010. Of this amount, $609,269.56 was collected in criminal actions and $1,230,689.28 was collected in civil actions, which includes $514,797 collected in shared cases wherein one or more U. S. Attorney’s offices or Department litigating divisions were also involved. Additionally, the office also collected $1,007,600 in criminal and civil forfeitures.
“During this time of economic recovery, these collections are more important than ever,” said U. S. Attorney Canary. “The U. S. Attorney’s Office is dedicated to protecting the public and recovering funds for the federal treasury and for victims of federal crime. We will continue to hold accountable those who seek to profit from their illegal activities.”
The monies collected included payments on cases in the following categories: affirmative civil enforcement, defaulted loans, bankruptcy, criminal fines, federal and non federal restitution, and asset forfeiture.
