Montgomery Woman Sentenced in Tax Fraud Case
Montgomery, Alabama - Tawana Powell, age 38, of Prattville, was sentenced on October 24, 2011, to 35 months in federal prison, announced George L. Beck, Jr., United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Powell pled guilty to conspiring to file false and fraudulent federal income tax returns tax fraud charges on August 4, 2011. Judge Fuller also ordered that Powell pay in restitution to the United States.
Between 2005 and 2007, Powell and her co-conspirators filed over 160 fraudulent returns with the IRS by using stolen identifying information of other individuals. Judge Fuller determined the intended loss to the United States to be over $1.3 million and ordered Powell to pay $676,465.49 in restitution to the United States.
The case was investigated by Internal Revenue Service–Criminal Investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.
