Montgomery, Alabama - George L. Beck, Jr., the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, announced today that Brett McCall, age 28, of Georgiana, Alabama, was sentenced last Thursday, April 5, 2012, by United States District Court Judge Mark E. Fuller to 60 months in federal prison for illegal ammunition possession. In early January 2012, McCall pled guilty to illegally possessing one .380 caliber, G.F.L. 380 Auto round in violation of federal law

McCall was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for possessing a round of ammunition which had expelled from a firearm McCall used to shoot and injure a Georgiana resident on May 2, 2010. Prior to possessing the ammunition, McCall had been convicted of Kidnapping 2d Degree in the State of Alabama. In addition to the prison sentence, McCall was also sentenced to serve three years of supervised release under the supervision of a federal probation officer after his prison term expires.

The case was investigated and prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which seeks to prevent violent crime through enforcement of federal firearms laws, such as the law prohibiting convicted felons from possessing firearms and ammunition. The program is known as Alabama ICE in the Middle District of Alabama. According to United States Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., “This sentence shows how important it is to prosecute felons who illegally possess firearms and ammunition. Removing criminals who possess illegal weapons from our streets remains a priority of this office.”

McCall’s case was investigated by officers and agents from the Georgiana Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (“ATF”). Assistant United States Attorneys Monica A. Stump and W. Brent Woodall prosecuted the case.
