Alabama Victims Compensation Commission Receives $840,000 from Justice Department to Help Crime Victims
Montgomery, Alabama - The Office for Victims of Crime in the Justice Department awarded $840,000 in grant money to the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission to be used to enhance the State victim compensation payments to eligible crime victims, announced George L. Beck, Jr., United States Attorney, Middle District of Alabama.
In an effort to alleviate hardships suffered by victims of crime, the Alabama Legislature passed the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission Law on June 1, 1984. Based on that law, the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission can financially help those people who have been victims of a crime. In order to qualify, the victim must be an innocent victim and not involved in the crime itself; and the victim must have suffered “criminally injurious conduct,” thus property damage would not qualify. The Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission provides the only substantial financial compensation to victims for expenses for personal injuries including medical, counseling, and funerals, as well as lost wages, prescriptions, moving, property, and crime scene clean-up. Applicants must meet criteria.
“This grant from the Department of Justice will help the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission lessen the financial burden on innocent victims of violent crime and serves as a vehicle of hope for the rights of crime victims,” stated Dr. Cassie T. Jones, Executive Director for the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission.
“To help make crime victims whole after having gone through the ordeal of being the victim of a crime is a priority of our office and the Department of Justice,” stated U.S. Attorney Beck. I am proud that the Department of Justice chose to allocate some of their grant money to the victims in the State of Alabama to help those going through a horrible time in the victims’ life.”
