Montgomery, Alabama - U.S. Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced today that Jamie Demarco Jones, 29, of Montgomery, Alabama, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison today by United States District Judge Mark E. Fuller for Jones’ involvement in a drug trafficking operation. Jones was convicted by a jury on February 10, 2012, for his attempt to possess with intent to distribute marijuana. The jury also found Jones guilty of using the telephone to aid in his attempted possession of marijuana, and of possession of an additional amount of marijuana with intent to distribute.

On May 29, 2011, Jones was arrested at his apartment while waiting to receive 60 pounds of marijuana from Noe Vasquez, who was also arrested that day while in route to Jones’s apartment hauling 60 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. The evidence presented by the United States at trial included recorded phone calls between Jones, Vasquez, and other associates; video recordings of prior meetings between Jones and Vasquez; and testimony by Vasquez. Police found an additional 120 pounds of marijuana at Vasquez residence. The evidence at trial included recorded phone calls between Jones, Vasquez, and other associates discussing drug deals and the collection of money and videos of Jones and Vasquez meeting at Jones’ apartment complex where Jones gave Vasquez money for a previous shipment of marijuana. Further, Vasquez pled guilty and testified against Jones at Jones’ trial. At trial, Vasquez explained that he was a drug courier and worked for Melchor Munoz. Munoz pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute drugs in the Northern District of Florida. Vasquez further told the jury that he had delivered marijuana from Munoz to Jones on four separate occasions and that the 120 pounds of marijuana found in Vasquez’ residence was to be delivered to Jones at a later time. After a 4-day trial, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts.

The case was investigated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Louis V. Franklin, Sr., and Jared Morris.
