U.S. ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL THOMAS PEREZ TO VISIT BIRMINGHAM

BIRMINGHAM - U.S. Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, will visit Birmingham this week. U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Perez will emphasize that civil rights enforcement is a priority of the federal government in North Alabama.

Perez and Vance will hold a press conference at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, 520 16th St. North, to discuss the visit and their commitment to enforcing federal civil rights laws.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting several events for Perez and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. During the two-day visit, Perez and Vance will meet with local leaders, civil rights community stakeholders and members of state, local and federal law enforcement.

Perez will deliver a keynote address in Birmingham at 6 p.m. Thursday at Miles College, 5500 Myron Massey Blvd., Fairfield.

Friday morning, at 9:30, he will visit Birmingham’s Horizons School, 2018 15th Ave. South, a non-profit, post-secondary school for students with learning and other disabilities.

Perez’s address at Miles College and his visit to Horizons School will be open to the press. For those events, and the Thursday press conference at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, all media must present government-issued photo I.D. (such as driver’s license) and valid media credentials.
