BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted a Birmingham man and former candidate for a Jefferson County Circuit Court judgeship for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Raymond R. Parmer Jr.

A one-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges CHUCK HUNTER, 58, with using the Internet and a telephone in an attempt to persuade a person he believed to be a 14-year-old boy to engage in a sexual act.

Hunter was arrested on state charges in the case June 13. He was released from the Jefferson County Jail on bond Wednesday on the state charges. HSI agents and U.S. Marshals arrested Hunter on the federal charges this morning at his Southside Birmingham home.

Hunter was removed from the ballot for a place on the Jefferson County Circuit Court following his state arrest.

HSI investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Fortune is prosecuting the case.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
