BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted a Birmingham man for the June armed robbery of a Pleasant Grove bank, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley.

The three-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges ORLANDO BARNES, 33, with armed bank robbery, using and carrying a firearm during the armed bank robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“This defendant has been convicted in state court of attempted murder and now faces federal charges of entering a bank with a gun and putting other people’s lives in jeopardy in order to rob the bank,” Vance said. “I would like to thank the federal and local law enforcement whose cooperative work led to the arrest of a dangerous suspect and to charges in the case.”

According to the indictment, BARNES entered the BB&T Bank on Park Road in Pleasant Grove on June 2 and robbed it using a handgun. Pleasant Grove Police apprehended Barnes shortly after he left the bank.

The case was investigated by the FBI, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pleasant Grove Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy is prosecuting the case.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
