FORMER PRISON GUARD PLEADS GUILTY TO BRIBERY IN FEDERAL COURT
BIRMINGHAM – A former federal corrections officer pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to bribery in connection to bringing prohibited tobacco products into the federal prison in Talladega, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Teresa Gulotta-Powers, special agent in charge of the Miami Field Office of the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General, announced.
FRANK DEAN, 28, of Talladega, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Karon O. Bowdre. DEAN admitted that from March to September, 2009, while a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institute, Talladega, he took money from an inmate and agreed to bring prohibited tobacco products into the prison.
“Bribery, or any other crime that endangers prison security, will not be tolerated in this district,” Vance said.
DEAN could receive a maximum of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Judge Bowdre scheduled DEAN’s sentencing for Sept. 15.
This case was investigated by the Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Department of Justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank M. Salter prosecuted the case.
