April 26, 2012

United States Attorney Kenyen R. Brown of the Southern District of Alabama announced that Aaron Scott Odegard, 29, of Theodore, Alabama, was sentenced this morning to seven years in prison for distribution of child pornography. Odegard pled guilty following an online undercover investigation that revealed he had been downloading and sharing files using computer software. Agents found 4,555 images and 744 videos of child pornography on Odegard's computers. Following his release from prison, Odegard must register as a sex offender and will be supervised by United States Probation officers for the rest of his life. Odegard was also ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to one of the child victims of his crime.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation and presented the case for prosecution to the United States Attorney's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Sean P. Costello handled the prosecution of the case on behalf of the United States. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, the United States Department of Justice's unified and comprehensive strategy to reduce the incidence of sexual exploitation of children.
