TROY A. EID SWORN IN AS UNITED STATES ATTORNEY
DENVER, CO – Troy A. Eid was sworn in as United States Attorney for the District of Colorado during a private ceremony last Friday, August 11, 2006, by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Lewis T. Babcock. Mr. Eid, the 41st United States Attorney for Colorado, reported for duty this morning.
Mr. Eid was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as United States Attorney on June 9, 2006. He was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on August 4, 2006. Mr. Eid replaces John W. Suthers, who served as United States Attorney before being appointed by Colorado Governor Bill Owens to become Colorado’s Attorney General. Suthers left the U.S. Attorney’s Office on December 31, 2004. Bill Leone had served as Acting United States Attorney and later as the court appointed United States Attorney from January 1, 2005 through August 13, 2006.
Mr. Eid serves as Colorado’s chief federal criminal prosecutor and represents the United States in civil cases where the government is a party to a lawsuit.
His legal practice focused on environmental, natural resources, and federal Indian law. He grew up in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and graduated from Stanford University and the University of Chicago Law School. Before taking office as U.S. Attorney, he was a partner in the Denver branch of one of the world’s largest law firms, Greenberg Traurig.
“It is an honor to serve as the United States Attorney for the District of Colorado,” said Eid. “I am grateful to the President and the Attorney General for their confidence, and the United States Senate,” Eid said. “As United States Attorney, I look forward to serving my fellow Coloradans.”
Eid also praised the tenure of his predecessor. “I want to recognize the hard work of Bill Leone. Bill is a gifted attorney and one of Colorado's truly great public servants. He and his family have earned a special place of honor in our community,” Eid said.
Earlier in his career, Eid was general counsel and chief operating officer of an Internet technology research consortium and directed engineering teams in North America, Europe and Asia. He is a member of the American Law Institute and admitted to practice law in Colorado and the Navajo Nation.
His past public service includes all three branches of the federal government. He was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Edith H. Jones, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission under President Ronald Reagan; and a Congressional Aide for law enforcement and the federal judiciary.
Colorado Governor Bill Owens appointed Eid as his Chief Legal Counsel in 1999, where he oversaw the appointment of 34 state judges and served on the commission that reviewed the mass shootings at Columbine High School. He went on to serve on Governor Owens' cabinet as the Chief Administrative Officer for Colorado's $13 billion state government.
Eid’s writings include “Strategic Democracy-Building: How U.S. States Can Help,” published by The Washington Quarterly magazine and a chapter in WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS: USING SOFT POWER TO UNDERMINE TERRORIST NETWORKS (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, 2003). He and his wife Allison, a Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, have two children.
