INMATE SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ASSAULTING PRISON GUARD

            DENVER – Jay Vaughan Gregory, a federal inmate and self-proclaimed member of a white supremacist organization, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Edward W. Nottingham to serve 240 months (20 years) consecutive to his current sentence for assaulting a prison guard, United States Attorney Troy Eid and FBI Special Agent in Charge James Davis announced today.  Gregory is currently serving two 20 year sentences for bank robberies in Utah and Montana. 
            Gregory was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on March 27, 2007 for assaulting a prison guard at the United States Penitentiary (USP) in Florence, Colorado.  He was found guilty of assault following a two day jury trial.
            According to the facts presented during trial, on August 15, 2006, Gregory heated two cups filled with liquid.  The defendant then threw the hot liquid into the face of a prison guard.  The liquid caused first and second degree burns on the guard’s face.  Gregory then attempted to break a light tube with the intent of stabbing the prison guard.  The light did not break.
            “A well-earned result,” said U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.
            This case was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and the FBI.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Judith Smith.
