David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that RAHEEM HANSBERRY, also known as “Sean Reeds,” 34, of the Bronx, New York, was sentenced on Tuesday, July 3, by United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to 120 months of imprisonment, followed by seven years of supervised release, for selling narcotics and illegally possessing a firearm in Hartford.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on October 14, 2010, after fleeing from and struggling with Hartford police officers, HANSBERRY was arrested.  During the struggle, HANSBERRY repeatedly reached for his waistband.  A subsequent search of HANSBERRY’s person revealed a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol in his waistband and four glass vials containing more than 14 grams of pure Phencyclidine (“PCP”) from his sweater pocket.

Prior to October 2010, HANSBERRY had been convicted of multiple felony offenses in New York and Connecticut, including two convictions for assault in the second degree, two convictions for fifth degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, third degree larceny and possession of narcotics.

It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

On October 3, 2011, HANSBERRY pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 10 or more grams of Phencyclidine, and one count of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.
HANSBERRY has been detained since his arrest on October 14, 2010.

This case was investigated by the Hartford Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan S. Freimann.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents of Connecticut’s cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
