
NEW BRITAIN RESIDENT PLEADS GUILTY
TO MISUSING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that CARLOS GARRIDO, 48, last residing in New Britain, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven to one count of misuse of a Social Security number.
According to court documents and statements made in court, GARRIDO is a citizen of Chile unlawfully residing in the United States. Between approximately 2004 and 2010, GARRIDO worked for several employers in Connecticut using the name and Social Security of another individual. GARRIDO filed multiple U.S. income tax returns using the assumed name and Social Security number, and also used the Social Security number to receive a line of credit from a federal credit union, and a mortgage from a federally-insured bank.
Judge Arterton has scheduled sentencing for October 9, 2012, at which time GARRIDO faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.
GARRIDO has been detained since his arrest on July 11, 2012.
This matter was investigated by the United States Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Douglas P. Morabito.
