David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Bridgeport returned an indictment today charging AUDEL SAMUEL RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ, 31, a citizen of Mexico recently residing in New Haven, with one count of reentry of a removed alien.

The indictment alleges that RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ  illegally reentered the United States after being deported to his native Mexico.  RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ did not obtain the consent of the U.S. Attorney General or his successor, the Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, to reapply for admission into the U.S.

According to previously filed court documents, RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ was deported from the U.S. to Mexico on May 21, 2010.

If convicted of the charge of illegally reentering the U.S., RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years.

RUIS-MAZARIEGOZ is currently detained in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

U.S. Attorney Fein stressed that an indictment is not evidence of guilt.  Charges are only allegations, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is being investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, National Fugitive Operations Program.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarala V. Nagala.
