David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that LEROY ALPHANSO DICK, 41, a citizen of Jamaica recently residing in Hartford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport to 28 months of imprisonment for illegally reentering the United States following his deportation.

According to court documents and statements made in court, DICK was deported from the United States to his native Jamaica in July 2008 following a state conviction for the distribution of cocaine. Thereafter, DICK illegally reentered the United States without first obtaining the consent of the Attorney General of the United States or his successor, the Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, to reapply for admission into the United States.

On September 27, 2011, Hartford Police Department officers responded to a shooting in an apartment building and found that DICK had been shot. DICK provided the officers with a fictitious name. After DICK had received medical attention, subsequent investigation revealed that he was in the country illegally. He has been detained in state or federal custody since October 4, 2011.

On May 18, 2012, DICK waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hal Chen.
