David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that GEORGE PATRICK PERKERT, 44, previously of Bridgeport, Conn., and Andalusia, Ala., was sentenced yesterday by United States District Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford to approximately 22 months of imprisonment, time served, and five years of supervised release, for failing to register as a sex offender.

The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (“SORNA”), which was passed by Congress in 2006 as part of the Adam Walsh Act, provides a comprehensive set of minimum standards for sex offender registration and notification in the United States and seeks to strengthen the nationwide network of sex offender registration and notification programs.  In part, SORNA requires registered sex offenders to register and keep their registration current in each jurisdiction in which they reside, work, or go to school.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in October 2000, PERKERT was convicted in New York of first degree sexual abuse.  Prior to his release from prison in 2003, PERKERT was informed of his registration obligations under SORNA.

In March 2006, PERKERT was convicted in Connecticut Superior Court of second degree burglary.  While incarcerated on this conviction, PERKERT registered as a sex offender with the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry.  After his release from incarceration in September 2008, PERKERT resided in a halfway house in Bridgeport to serve a four-year term of special parole.  PERKERT initially complied with Connecticut Sex Offender Registry requirements, but failed to respond to an address verification request that was mailed to the halfway house on October 2, 2009.

On October 31, 2010, PERKERT was arrested by members of the United States Marshals Service in Alabama, where he had been residing since July 7, 2009, after he absconded from the Bridgeport halfway house.  PERKERT failed to notify officials in Connecticut of his change of address, and he failed to register as a sex offender in Alabama.

PERKERT has been detained since his arrest.  He faces parole violation proceedings in state court.

On January 6, 2012, PERKERT pleaded guilty to one count of failure to register with the state sex offender registry.

This matter was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Deborah R. Slater.
