David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that JONATHON BROWN, 35, of New Haven was sentenced today by United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to 34 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing ammunition.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on September 9, 2011, BROWN entered the Brien McMahon Federal Building on Lafayette Boulevard in Bridgeport carrying a black bag.  Court security officers (“CSOs”) directed BROWN to empty his pockets, place his bag on the x-ray machine conveyor belt, and walk through the metal detector, all of which he did.  As BROWN’s bag came into view on the image screen of the x-ray machine, one of the CSOs saw six small objects in the bag that he recognized as ammunition.  Upon physical inspection of the contents of the bag, the CSO found a small pouch containing six rounds of assorted ammunition, the majority of which was manufactured outside of Connecticut.

Soon after discovering that BROWN has sustained prior felony convictions, the U.S. Marshals Service placed BROWN under arrest and seized his bag and its contents.  The bag also contained a digital scale, more than 100 small glassine baggies, two telephones and other items.

It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

BROWN has been detained since his arrest on September 9, 2011.  On August 30, 2012, he pleaded guilty to one count possession of ammunition by a previously convicted felon.

This matter was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Vanessa Richards.
