Three District Men Sentenced to Prison Terms
For Carrying Out Nighttime Home Invasion and Burglary
- Entered Home While Victims, Including a Baby, Were Asleep -

     WASHINGTON - Three District men have been sentenced to prison terms on charges stemming from the burglary of one home in Northwest Washington and the attempted burglary of another, both on the same day, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

     All three defendants were sentenced in recent weeks in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia by the Honorable Ann O’Regan Keary.

     The most recent sentencing took place today, when Dawhan Archible, 18, was sentenced to a prison term of five years and 10 months. Archible pled guilty in May 2011 to charges of burglary, attempted burglary, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and other crimes.

     Andre Reid, 20, was sentenced on September 30, 2011 to seven years and one month in prison after pleading guilty in July 2011 to charges of burglary, attempted burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

     Rico Carr, 21, was sentenced on September 12, 2011 to a total of 12 years and 10 months of incarceration. He was convicted at trial in May 2011 of burglary, attempted burglary, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and other charges. He subsequently pled guilty to a second burglary charge in a second case.

     According to the government’s evidence, the three defendants, and two others, agreed to commit a nighttime residential burglary on December 20, 2010. The first attempt, on Corey Place NW, was unsuccessful. The five men then entered a residence in the 3800 block of 47th Street NW, through an unlocked door, at approximately 2:30 a.m. They stole property, including cell phones, a laptop, an iPod, and other items, from the residence while the people inside - including a baby - slept. When one resident woke up at the sound of footsteps, the burglars fled.

     Carr was apprehended within minutes on 47th Street NW, wearing multiple coats, gloves, and a face mask. Stolen property was located on the ground near where he was stopped. Archible was stopped approximately an hour later, roughly five blocks away, with some of the stolen property and a face mask in his possession. Reid was stopped approximately three hours later, a few blocks away in the 4400 block of Massachusetts Avenue NW, as he appeared to hide behind a tree.

     Carr’s other burglary case stemmed from a break-in that took place on August 6, 2010 in the 5400 block of Potomac Avenue NW. Carr entered the residence during the night through an unlocked back door as the residents, including a child, slept upstairs. Carr stole a laptop, a television, two gaming systems, money, and a briefcase from the residence. The next morning, the owner’s personal papers from the briefcase were strewn through the alley.

     In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Machen expressed his appreciation to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and particularly praised the work of Detectives Dejuan Williams, John Paprcka, and Charles Fultz; Sgt. Dustin Nevel, and Officers Richard Schwartz, Michael Handy, Everett Copeland, Lauren Griffin, Paul Hustler, Michael Smith, Jose Mannechai, Darren Bemiller, Debajyoti Bhattacharjee, and Jason Bagshaw. U.S. Attorney Machen also commended the work of U.S. Attorney’s Office Paralegals Wanda Trice and Tamaya Reid, Operations Manager Linda McDonald, Legal Assistants Tierra Nanches and Serrita Hill, Information Technology Specialists Kimberly Smith and Paul Howell, and Investigators John Marsh, Tommy Miller, Robert Jones, Nelson Rhone, Mark Crawford, and Durand Odom. He also expressed his appreciation to Montgomery County Police Detective Marc Frazier and Raymond Pilkerton of the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. Finally, he commended Assistant U.S. Attorney April Fearnley, who prosecuted the case.
