Convicted Sex Offender Pleads Guilty
To Sexually Assaulting Teenager
- Defendant Attacked Victim While She Was Sleeping -

     WASHINGTON - A 56-year-old man has pled guilty to second-degree child sexual abuse for sexually attacking a teenage girl, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced today.

      The defendant, of Washington, D.C., is not identified here to protect the privacy of the victim. He pled guilty on Aug. 24, 2012 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable William M. Jackson scheduled sentencing for Oct. 19, 2012. Under terms of the plea agreement, the defendant faces up to 66 months in prison.

      According to the government’s evidence, the attack took place at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 3, 2012. The defendant and the 14-year-old victim, the stepdaughter of his niece, were visiting relatives at a family home in Northwest Washington. After the victim fell asleep on a couch, the defendant unfastened her pants and sexually assaulted her. The victim woke up during the assault and immediately reported the incident to a family member.

      This marks the defendant’s third conviction for a sex offense, and he must now become a lifetime sex offender registrant.

      In announcing the plea, U.S. Attorney Machen commended the efforts of the detectives and other personnel who investigated the case for the Metropolitan Police Department. He acknowledged the hard work and dedication of those who assisted with the investigation and prosecution at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Victim/Witness Advocate Tracey Hawkins, and Paralegal Specialist D’Yvonne Key. Finally, he thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Mervin A. Bourne, Jr. who investigated and prosecuted the case.
