BROWARD COUNTY DENTIST PLEADS GUILTY TO FILING A FALSE TAX RETURN
Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Jose A. Gonzalez, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CID), announced that defendant Craig E. Meskin, formerly of Palm Beach County, pled guilty today to filing a false 2007 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Form 1040, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(1). At sentencing, Meskin faces a maximum statutory penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment. Sentencing is scheduled for September 2, 2011 at 2:00 pm in West Palm Beach, FL, before U.S. District Judge Kenneth A. Marra.
According to a court document filed in conjunction with his plea hearing, defendant Meskin is a practicing dentist with an office in Coral Springs, Florida. Today, Meskin pled guilty to knowingly under-reporting cash receipts from his dental practice. Specifically, Meskin admitted that he kept two sets of books and records for his business. One set of financial records reflected the correct amount of business receipts, including cash receipts, and the other set of financial records excluded cash received from patients. As further stated in court documents, Meskin did not report to the IRS approximately $75,000 in patient fees paid in cash during taxable year 2007.
Mr. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kerry Baron.
